The mobility concept

Experience and discover the industrial culture of the Ruhr Area

A special mobility concept of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) public transport authority ensured excellent connections between all venues. Movement and mobility are the very essence of ExtraSchicht. The visitors' voyage of discovery through the Night of Industrial Culture really is a journey. They travel to the various venues, thus experiencing the density of the cultural landscape in the Metropolis Ruhr. The rhythm of the night was set by the ExtraSchicht shuttle bus network, which in 2010 was once again be set up specially for ExtraSchicht by the VRR.

The numerous shuttle bus lines connected all the venues, departing at least every 15 minutes between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. The Regional Express lines and the local public trains, you could even cross longer distances rapidly. Here, the ExtraSchicht ticket acted as a ticket for all means of public transport. As one of the revellers, this gave you free travel for the whole day on 19 June, and on 20 June until 7 a.m. in all means of transport operated by Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR), Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS), Verkehrsgemeinschaft Ruhr-Lippe (VRL) and Verkehrsgemeinschaft Niederrhein (VGN). In addition to buses, trams and trains, the Night of Industrial Culture also once again included unusual means of transport such as museum-piece railway trains, historical trams, the ship shuttle on the Rhine-Herne canal, and the bicycle shuttle for active participants.

Our tip for your planning: find a few venues in advance, ideally belonging to the same hub. This is because experience over recent years has shown that the eight hours of ExtraSchicht barely leave time to visit more than three venues, if you want to really experience and enjoy the individual locations.

The complete ExtraSchicht mobility plan can be found in the programme booklet for ExtraSchicht 2010, which comes out on 28 April 2010, and which will also be available to download here.
