After having arrived on Friday, you will get first impressions of Essen during a city tour. The double-decker bus brings you to the most exciting sights inter alia the World Culture Heritage Zollverein, the garden city Margarethenhöhe and the Villa Hügel.  You can enjoy the evening to the full, for instance, in the exclusive atmosphere of your five-star hotel, the Sheraton Hotel Essen. The rooms are elegantly furnished and exhibit a fresh, welcoming ambiance and high comfort. In the Sheraton’s fitness area, state-of-the-art cardio and exercise machines are at your disposal. Let’s take it nice and easy on Saturday and participate in a guided tour through the UNESCO world culture heritage Zollverein after a late breakfast. As you are already there, it is worth making a detour to the Ruhr Museum. It is the “historical conscious” of the Ruhr area and is situated in the former coal washing plant of the pit Zollverein. At 6 p.m. you start your ExtraSchicht and you are spoilt for choices until 2 a.m. the next morning: more than 50 venues are equally spread over the Metropolis Ruhr. Former steel mills, production plants and tips become the scenery for street theatre, music, art, dance shows and light spectacles. The Ruhr area celebrates – celebrate with us!

When breathtaking industry settings become a stage for spectacular productions – then it is time for the ExtraSchicht, then, the Metropolis Ruhr is on the move. Let yourself be captivated by the extraordinary atmosphere of this night and embark on a discovery tour through the region on 30th June 2012.  Since its premier in 2001, the Extraschicht skilfully stages former industrial facilities und current production plant. Gasometers, cokeries, pits and tips change into imposing sceneries for staging of international artists. 
Year after year, about 200,000 attendants have their individual ExtraSchicht and travel by shuttle buses from venue to venue between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. early in the morning. Enjoy the street theatres, music, artistry, dance shows and light spectacles und let yourself be enchanted by the charm of the Ruhr area. 

The ExtraSchicht ticket includes unlimited use of the local public transports provided by VRR
(2. class) on 30th June until 7 a.m. the next day. Moreover, you can make use of the ExtraSchicht Shuttle Service from 6 pm until 3 a.m. The venues and programmes are accessible between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. and there is free admission for children under 6.
